An artist is a dreamer consenting to dream of the actual world.  George Santayana

Love this quote. Every artist must be a dreamer first. Dreams are not really separate from the “actual” world. They take us deeper into the actual world. In Zen, even the actual world is suspected of being but a dream. The dreamer can see and feel a secret, mysterious world just behind the surface of things, and this is what an artist is often trying to show in his work. For me, nature is my connection to the divine and I try to capture at least a little of that in my images.

All of nature is a mystery to me, the song “Think I’ll let the mystery be,” says it all for me. This image captures the surface and beyond for me.

Enjoy,
Tom

“The act of painting is about one heart telling another heart where he found salvation.”

The act of painting is about one heart telling another heart where he found salvation.  Ai Weiwei

The same is true for making images. Today, there is not that much difference between the two. The heart must be involved in either to create works that reach out and touch the hearts of others. The one thing I do feel, is that the print is mightier than the screen when it comes to images. Peoples attention will be captured by a large print, while they will just glance at the screen version and move on. The print takes on some of the magic of a painting.

This is a very painterly image of a lobster boat on Penobscot Bay in October. The little dinghy provides some scale and the coolness of the scene gives some hint of the season.

Enjoy,
Tom

“To make us feel small in the right way is a function of art; men can only make us feel small in the wrong way.”

To make us feel small in the right way is a function of art; men can only make us feel small in the wrong way.  E.M. Forster

Art can capture the immense, the eternal, the invisible, the heart and the soul. A true artist is able to see more and more, eventually it’s hard to hide from even yourself and you begin to realize no matter how much you accomplish, how small you truly are, and yet to work becomes all there is to do. I have come to embrace my immense smallness!

I have also come to embrace the immenseness of the world around me, from my front steps to the great beyond. This image captures a small slice of that immenseness.

Enjoy,
Tom
